At the Television Critic’s Association panel this past weekend, NBC presented the cast and producers of its new dramedy, The Mysteries of Laura. OHSOGRAY was on hand to get the scoop. The show features Debra Messing as a homicide detective struggling to balance the demands of her job and the chaos of her homelike. Messing was jointed on stage by her co-stars Josh Lucas, Laz Alonso, Janina Gavankar, and executive producers Jeff Rake, McG, Greg Berlanti, and Aaron Kaplan.
Messing described her interest in playing a cop: “I have been an avid watcher of what was CourtTV and is now TruTV, like trials, because I’m fascinated by the judicial system. I’m amazed by how extreme human nature can present itself.” Watching cops and then playing one was not necessarily a seamless transition when it came to learning to fire a gun. “I didn’t feel as confident as I may have looked,” Messing explained.
While you may imagine that catching bad guys would be the toughest part of Laura’s day, her unruly twin boys give even the most wily criminals a run for their money. Between keeping a handle on them and managing the relationship with her soon to be ex-husband, Laura is stretched incredibly thin. Messing described playing this complicated, all-over-the-map character, “This is a dream come true for me.”
The Mysteries of Laura premieres September 24, 2014 on NBC.
