Despite how you may feel about Aslaug moving in on Lagertha’s man, the woman who portrays this Viking princess is incredibly likable. Alyssa Sutherland, a former Gucci model with an Australian accent (yes, no fair), recently shared some of her thoughts about History Channel’s historical drama.
In the first episode of the second season, Aslaug shows up unannounced and heavily pregnant, much to the chagrin of Lagertha. When Lagertha leaves, Aslaug settles into her new role as the Earl’s wife. We quickly learn, though, that there is more to Aslaug than a pretty face. She may be a Seeress. Sutherland describes this part of Aslaug:
What I love about the way that Michael Hirst does this is that you’re not really totally sure if the sort of magical elements that he weaves in every now and then are really happening or if it’s just what they believed at the time. I like that it is left up to the viewer to decide.
I enjoy the way that we deal with those elements of the show – the gods and the myths surrounding them. I certainly think that, whether Aslaug was in fact a Seeress or not, she definitely believed it and the people around her believed it. That’s a really fun part of her to play because you don’t get to do that every day. That was really fun.
I can’t say that I’m on Team Aslaug, but I suppose I can be on Team Sutherland. Vikings airs on Thursdays, 10/9c on History Channel.
